German-Netherlands Corps: new NATO command responsibility in the Baltic region
Germany and the Netherlands are assuming greater responsibility for protecting NATO’s eastern flank, just a few days before the NATO summit in Ankara.
(d.de/Bundeswehr) – The 1 German-Netherlands Corps has assumed command responsibility for NATO forces in Estonia and Latvia, and therefore for parts of the alliance’s defence on its eastern flank. During the handover ceremony that was held in Valga on the Estonian border Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that this step was a visible demonstration of the alliance’s unity and readiness.
Responsibility was handed over from the Multinational Corps Northeast in a Transfer of Authority ceremony in the Estonian town Valga on 30 June 2026. This new arrangement is part of the further implementation of NATO’s regional defence plans. The Nato Force Model is designed to ensure that forces can be deployed more quickly as well as providing for clearer command structures. In the future, the Multinational Corps Northeast will be focusing more strongly on Poland and Lithuania, while the 1 German-Netherlands Corps is taking over command responsibility for Estonia and Latvia.
The corps that was established in 1995 and is based in Münster is considered exemplary of European military integration: German and Dutch soldiers cooperate with personnel from other EU states, as well as planning operations and coordinating multinational forces. From Germany’s and the Netherlands’ point of view, the new task highlights the role of close cooperation in deterrence and defence.
