National Security Council meets over drone incident

The National Security Council coordinates security capabilities across the Federal Government. It has now discussed the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

Berlin (dpa) – The National Security Council has met to discuss the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The council met by telephone under the chairmanship of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz was said afterwards to be in constant contact with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and other members of the government.

On the night of 5 August, there was an incident involving a drone carrying explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The explosive device was successfully defused. 

The National Security Council was established in 2025 to coordinate the Federal Government’s capabilities in the areas of internal and external security.
