Germany planning additional funding for memorial sites
Commissioner for Culture Weimer wants to boost memorial sites that remember Nazi and East German regime crimes. Ten million euros in additional funding planned for 2027.
Berlin (dpa, d.de) – Federal Commissioner for Culture Wolfram Weimer wants to step up activities to remember the crimes committed by the Nazis and the East German regime. In 2027, an additional ten million euros in federal funding is to be made available for memorial sites.
“At a time when disinformation and distorted accounts of history are on the rise and the voices of contemporary witnesses are falling silent, our remembrance culture needs strong memorial sites more than ever,” said Weimer.
Half of the additional funding is earmarked for projects aimed for example at preserving historical sites, for digitalisation and online information and for educational activities and applied research. It is expected that memorial sites will be able to apply for funding from September.
A further five million euros is to benefit memorial sites that already receive federal funding, such as the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation, the Dachau and Flossenbürg concentration camp memorials, the Topography of Terror memorial site and the Saxon Memorial Foundation. The funding is intended to cover increased personnel and security costs, among other things.
