Reiche sees industrial AI as offering competitive advantage
In the opinion of Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche, Germany has a good chance of playing an internationally leading role in the area of industrial AI.
Berlin (dpa, d.de) – Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche believes that Germany has a good chance of playing an internationally leading role in the area of industrial artificial intelligence. “We probably won’t win the race when it comes to large language models. But we are very well positioned vis-à-vis industrial AI, which is about making machines, factories and production smarter,” Reiche said.
Unlike large language models, which are designed to understand human language and perform tasks, industrial AI aims to make machines and production processes more intelligent and autonomous.
Germany and Europe are in a good starting position, she explained. “When it comes to industrial data from highly complex production processes, Europe and Germany are among the world’s strongest players,” said Reiche. The European AI Act also creates a good foundation for this, she added.
She described the depth of European industrial manufacturing and the data this generated as a “real competitive advantage”. She believes that if AI can be used to create new value from this data, this will open up a great opportunity for Germany. “We mustn’t miss out on this opportunity,” Reiche said.
