Dobrindt: New centre to research drone security
Germany is expanding its drone research: a new centre for innovative technologies opens on 18 August.
Berlin (dpa) – Following the discovery of a drone carrying explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is looking to expand research into drone security. A new drone security research centre is due to open on 18 August at the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) test airport in Saxony-Anhalt.
“Together with the DLR, we are establishing a new technology centre that is unique in Germany, where innovative drone security technologies will be researched, developed and tested in living labs,” Dobrindt told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag. The centre would unite scientific excellence and technological innovation and meet the requirements of the security authorities, the minister said.
Shortly after the incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Dobrindt described it as a “hybrid” attack by “foreign powers”. He has now told Bild am Sonntag: “The clear strategic objective of foreign powers is to defeat us politically and socially. Creating uncertainty, stoking fear and causing destabilisation are hallmarks of hybrid attacks.” Germany must continue to prepare for this, he added. “We are not at war, but we are a daily target of hybrid warfare,” the minister said.
