Germany supports UN mission in Haiti
In the coming weeks, the Bundeswehr will transport equipment and material to the international relief personnel in Haiti.
Germany is planning to contribute to the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH). The Bundeswehr - Germany’s armed forces - will be making air transport capacities available to the UN mission at short notice. Countries taking part in the mission include Kenya, Chad, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Guatemala and Ivory Coast. According to the Federal Ministry of Defence, it will transport equipment and material for the troops involved in the coming weeks.
By taking part in the mission, Germany wants to contribute to rapidly stabilising the security situation, says the Ministry. The UN mission and a more robust force to combat criminal gangs are to help curb violence in the Caribbean state.
For years, Haiti has been struggling with political instability, poverty and severe gang violence. Criminal groups now control around 90 percent of the country and are responsible for murders, kidnappings and rapes. At the same time, nearly half of the country’s roughly eleven million inhabitants lack secure access to food.
