Brussels (dpa / d.de) – The EU has called on Israel and Iran to refrain from further attacks on each other. According to a statement issued by heads of state and government at the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday night, all parties are urged to exercise the utmost restraint and not take any action that could exacerbate tensions in the region. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: “We see it as crucial that everything should be done at this time to bring about further de-escalation. It is important to us that Israel should make the most of its success to strengthen its position in the region as whole, so to speak, and not respond with a large-scale attack of its own.”

The statement was issued due to concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could develop into a major war. Furthermore, EU leaders expressed their full solidarity with the people of Israel and condemned Iran’s attack, also emphasising their will to impose further sanctions against Iran – in particular in response to the latter’s use of drones and missiles.
