(d.de) - During a visit to Jerusalem, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on Israel to change course. In view of the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, he urged for sufficient aid shipments to be made possible quickly and safely - primarily via land routes. The situation is “beyond imagination”, said Wadephul. Germany’s participation in air drops had only been an emergency measure, he added.

Furthermore, the minister warned against Israel’s international isolation and called on Netanyahu’s government to position itself clearly against expulsion and annexation. He said this was the only way to avoid further alienation from the EU.

Wadephul is continuing his trip with a visit to the West Bank on Friday. Talks with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah are planned, among other things. They will focus on the violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers and the latest annexation plans.
