Development Minister Svenja Schulze has agreed with the Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan, and the Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Soud, to intensify development cooperation between Germany and Jordan in the area of water supply. The agreement mainly concerns Germany’s participation in the construction of one of the world’s largest seawater desalination plants and also resource-saving irrigation in the area of agriculture. Jordan is one of Germany’s key partners in the Middle East. “Jordan has actively promoted peace in the Middle East for years and is doing a tremendous job as a host country for millions of refugees from the region,” says Schulze, adding that the terrorist attack by Hamas and the ongoing war in Gaza had led to a sharp decline in tourism and trade in Jordan. In addition to this, climate change is having clearly noticeable consequences which are acutely jeopardising the supply of drinking water available to the population. “At this time in particular, we want to send out a clear signal that Germany is looking to support the stabilisation of the country and the region.”
