Pergamonmuseum wants to maintain an international presence even while closed
The Pergamonmuseum is one of Germany’s most popular museums. It is currently closed for refurbishment. Some of its treasures are to be exhibited nonetheless.
Berlin (dpa) - Berlin’s Pergamonmuseum, which is to remain closed for years yet, wants to maintain a presence by also cooperating with museums abroad. “We want to remain visible,” said Barbara Helwing, director of the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East). To this end, cooperation with other Berlin museums is already planned. Talks about loans are also underway for example with the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the British Museum in London.
The Pergamonmuseum is one of Germany’s most popular museums. With its Collection of Classical Antiquities, Museum of the Ancient Near East and Museum of Islamic Art, it is one of just a few museums to normally attract more than a million visitors each year. The museum will remain completely closed for at least another three years. The part of the building featuring the Pergamon Altar is expected to reopen in 2027. The comprehensive refurbishment of the South Wing is set to begin in late 2024. This part of the museum will remain closed until at least 2037.
