Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to the USA in February for his inaugural visit.
Washington/Berlin (dpa) – In February, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will travel to the USA for his inaugural visit. This was confirmed by a government spokesperson in Berlin. Earlier, the White House had announced the visit to Washington. "Germany is one of our closest allies," said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki. "We naturally look forward to welcoming the chancellor here in the United States in February." An exact date for the visit has not yet been given.
Scholz was sworn in as Germany's new chancellor on 8 December and has since made inaugural visits to Paris, Brussels, Warsaw, Rome and Madrid. As Germany's closest ally outside the European Union, the USA is traditionally one of the first destinations for a new chancellor. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) was received by her counterpart Antony Blinken in Washington on 5 January for her inaugural visit.
