Munich (dpa) - The death of Brazilian idol Pelé has been met with great sadness in Germany. Not only a great footballer but also a great human being, Pelé was also extraordinarily popular in Germany, partly because the best German footballer, “Emperor” Franz Beckenbauer, had a close friendship with “el rei de futbol”, the king of football. 77-year-old Beckenbauer said: “Football has lost the greatest in its history today – and I have lost a unique friend.” Pelé died on Thursday at the age of 82 at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo. “Born in Três Corações, Pelé had three hearts: for football, for his family, for all people. He was one who played with the stars and always stayed grounded,” added Beckenbauer, who had played with Pelé at US club Cosmos New York in 1977.
