A SHARP BRAND. The blades produced by the famous knife manufacturer Zwilling J. A. Henckels AG have a particularly long success story to look back on: founded in 1731 by Peter Henckels, a knife-maker from Solingen, Zwilling is one of the world’s oldest trademarks. Johann Abraham Henckels opened a first sales outlet in Berlin in 1818. This was followed by shops in New York, Vienna, Copenhagen and Rotterdam. Such was the international hype about this trademarked knife that in 1905 the explorer Leo Frobenius gave an Africa mountain range in what was then Congo the name “Zwilling”, and another the name “Henckels-Berge”. Today, Zwilling kitchen knives, scissors and kitchen gadgets are sold in 100 countries, and the company employs 3,200 people worldwide. In 2011, the company’s turnover was 467 million euros. Zwilling knives are particularly popular in China, where sharp items with the designation “Made in Germany” are rated very highly.
