What makes the theatre scene in Germany so special?

The German theatre scene stands out for its large number of theatres and opera houses and the diversity of genres on offer. This is why UNESCO listed Germany’s theatre and opera scene as intangible cultural heritage in 2014. Why does Germany have so many theatres?

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Germany was made up of many individual principalities. Dukes and monarchs would bring theatre to their courts, though the burgeoning bourgeoisie also saw theatre as a welcome contribution to cultural education. From the 19th century, the middle classes established municipal theatres that are still up and running today.

How are theatres and opera houses funded in Germany?

Most German theatres and opera houses are funded by the public and private sectors. Germany’sfederal states fund national and state theatres, while municipal theatres are paid for by the local city or town. Private theatres are often financed by foundations and sponsors. An independent scene comprising groups and collectives and performing at independent venues completes the range of theatrical offerings in Germany.
