2025 World Climate Conference: The “Amazon COP” in Belém
Focal points, objectives and Germany’s contribution: The most significant facts about COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
Why is the 2025 UN Climate Conference so important?
From 10 to 21 November 2025, world representatives will meet in Belém, Brazil, at COP30 (the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 30th Conference of the Parties) to discuss their future course of action in the fight against the climate crisis. This is an urgent necessity: 2024 was the hottest year since records began. Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era – the target set in 2015 by the Paris Agreement – is in danger of becoming unachievable; indeed global warming could even exceed two degrees without decisive countermeasures.
Why is the 2025 conference also dubbed the “Amazon COP”?
The venue in Belém on the edge of the Amazon basin reflects the central theme: the climate-protecting role of forests, especially tropical rainforests that are threatened by deforestation, fires and drought. Brazil therefore wants to introduce a new international financial instrument – the Tropical Forest Forever Fund (TFFF) with a planned volume of around 125 billion US dollars.
What other goals has COP30 set for itself?
The agenda formulated by the Brazilian COP Presidency comprises six areas of action with 30 core objectives that are designed to accelerate the implementation of existing climate agreements. In addition to protecting forests, the focus is on our energy transition, the oceans and biodiversity. Agriculture and cities are also to become more sustainable and resilient. Social aspects including just transition and the inclusion of indigenous communities are also part of this.
What contribution is Germany making?
Germany has further strengthened its support for international climate financing: In 2024 it provided some 11.8 billion euros to enable sustainable development, climate protection and adaptation measures in partner countries. Germany is also due to become climate neutral by 2045 – by expanding renewable energies, greater energy efficiency and the phase-out of fossil fuels. Germany is also represented at COP30 with its German Climate Pavilion under whose umbrella the German government brings together German and International voices from politics and civil society. A wide range of topics will be discussed, including the significance of coffee in the climate crisis, the leadership role of women and indigenous groups, and the crucial importance of the rainforest.
