The “Ankommen” app aims to make it easier for new arrivals, particularly refugees, to find their feet and get settled in Germany. The app, which has been available for over a year now, was developed by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), the German Federal Employment Agency, the broadcasting corporation Bayerischer Rundfunk, and the Goethe Institute. On 14 February 2017 it received an international award in Dubai, winning in the category “Best m-Government Service Award” for “Social Affairs” at the World Government Summit. The summit is a global platform supported by the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, OECD and other organisations that publicises and networks trailblazing public initiatives on a global scale. Since its launch the “Ankommen” app has been downloaded some 230,000 times. It offers new arrivals in Germany practical assistance and information on the asylum application process, access to the labour market and life in Germany. The website is available in German, English, French, Arabic and Farsi.
