Appealing for EU unity

Sibiu, Romania (dpa) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday called for unity to give the European Union a better chance to stand up to international competitors.

"The world does not sleep," she said at the start of an EU summit in Romania. "We must be innovative, we must be strong, we must be united."

Merkel said unity was about showing the world that, despite its differences, EU countries were able to act as one to further peace and prosperity.

The informal summit in Romania brings together leaders from 27 EU nations, excluding Britain, to discuss the EU's future. A number of participants have recommended reforms, though the final summit communique will be a more general statement of intentions.  

Sibiu (dpa) - Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel hat die Europäische Union zur Geschlossenheit aufgerufen, um sich im internationalen Wettbewerb behaupten zu können. «Die Welt schläft nicht», sagte die CDU-Politikerin am Donnerstag zum Auftakt des EU-Gipfels im rumänischen Sibiu. «Wir müssen innovativ sein, wir müssen stark sein, wir müssen geeint sein. Und dafür werden wir heute werben.» Es gehe darum zu zeigen, dass die EU trotz aller Differenzen zum gemeinsamen Handeln in der Lage sei, um Frieden und Wohlstand zu sichern.

Auf dem informellen EU-Gipfel ohne Großbritannien wollen sich die anderen 27 Staats- und Regierungschefs mit der Zukunftsagenda der EU befassen. Mehrere Teilnehmer haben Reformvorschläge vorgelegt. Der Entwurf für die Gipfelerklärung ist aber sehr allgemein gehalten.
