Bundestag elections on 26 September?
Political parties have long been preparing for next autumn's Bundestag elections. Gradually, the date is taking on more concrete shape.
Berlin (dpa) - Following consultations with the federal states and parliamentary groups, Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) has suggested 26 September 2021 as the date for the next federal elections, according to a proposal from the minister. The final decision must be taken by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
"As the dates for elections to the German Bundestag are not supposed to collide with holiday periods, only 19 or 26 September 2021 are possible for the next Bundestag elections. All other dates overlap with either the summer or autumn holidays in several states," Seehofer writes. Apparently, a majority of the states and the parties represented in the Bundestag have voted in favour of 26 September, and the Federal Election Commissioner has not raised any objections.
