Cabinet reshuffle in the Federal Government
Following the resignation of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader, Chancellor Friedrich Merz is appointing new people to several key cabinet posts.
Berlin (dpa) – A little over a week after the resignation of CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn (CDU), Chancellor Friedrich Merz is putting together a major reshuffle of senior government posts. Thorsten Frei, currently head of the Federal Chancellery, is due to be elected as Spahn’s successor on Wednesday. Health Minister Nina Warken will take over Frei’s position at the Chancellery and will in turn be succeeded by the current CDU Secretary General, Carsten Linnemann.
Philipp Amthor, previously Parliamentary State Secretary for Digital Affairs, will become Minister of State for Federal-State Relations at the Federal Chancellery, while Steffen Bilger, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s First Parliamentary Secretary, will succeed Patrick Schnieder as transport minister. Bilger is regarded as a recognised transport expert, having served for many years on the relevant Bundestag committee before later becoming Parliamentary State Secretary in the ministry.
According to dpa, Christiane Schenderlein, Minister of State for Sport at the Federal Chancellery, is also set to be replaced.
