"Climate protection is a driver of growth"

Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected concerns about new climate targets during the corona crisis. "I do not see climate protection as an obstacle to growth, but as a driver of growth," said Europe's longest-serving head of government at an online conference of Foundation 2°, an initiative of entrepreneurs. There are new market opportunities, for example in renewable energies and efficiency technologies, said Merkel.
Germany therefore supports the EU Commission's proposed target of reducing the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030 as compared with 1990 levels. "Taking this path is difficult, but also worthwhile", said the chancellor. She described climate protection as a challenge for humankind.
