Commemorative event to mark anniversary of Russian attack on Ukraine

Germany to hold central event on 24 February in show of solidarity with Ukraine.

Berlin (dpa) - German leaders will commemorate the Russian attack on Ukraine a year ago with a central event at Bellevue Palace in Berlin on 24 February. According to the Office of the Federal President, Germany wants to show solidarity with Ukraine and honour the Ukrainian people’s fight for freedom. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will give the keynote speech.

According to a spokesperson, the heads of all five constitutional bodies have been invited to the commemorative event to mark the anniversary of the Russian invasion. In addition to the federal president and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, these include the presidents of the Bundestag, Bundesrat and Federal Constitutional Court – Bärbel Bas, Peter Tschentscher and Stephan Harbarth. The Embassy of Ukraine is also to be included, with which consultations are currently underway, the spokesperson said.
