German Chancellor Scholz talks to Zelensky
Federal Chancellor pledges support on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
Berlin (d.de/dpa) - Federal Chancellor Scholz held a telephone call with Ukraine’s President Zelensky to mark the country’s Independence Day on 24 August. The Federal Chancellor reaffirmed Germany’s “lasting and unwavering solidarity” with Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression. He and Zelensky also discussed the miliary and humanitarian situation in Ukraine. On Ukraine’s Independence Day other western Allies of the Kyiv government pledged further support as it defends against the Russian invasion. The governments of the USA, UK and Poland expressed similar views to those of Scholz. A number of celebrations took place in Kyiv itself, which were attended by the Polish President Andrzej Duda and Lithuania’s Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
Since the war began, Germany’s Federal Government has provided bilateral aid worth over €33.9 billion for civilian and military purposes. An overview of Germany’s current support to Ukraine is available here.
