Germany agrees to supply tanks to Ukraine

Ramstein/Berlin (dpa) - Germany intends to support Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia by supplying anti-aircraft tanks and by training its soldiers. This was announced on Tuesday by Germany’s Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht at a high-level meeting at the US air base in Ramstein, Germany.
The German government is allowing Gepard tanks to be supplied from industry stocks. The arms manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is being given the green light to sell the technically refurbished anti-aircraft tanks from former Bundeswehr stocks. The company has a number of the tanks – in the medium double digits – from the German Army’s disbanded air defence. The Gepard can also be used in combat against ground targets.
Defence Minister Lambrecht also announced the training of Ukrainian soldiers. “We are working together with our American friends on training Ukrainian troops in artillery systems on German soil”, the minister said.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had invited some 40 countries to the Ukraine conference at Ramstein Air Base. Germany’s Defence Minister Lambrecht and her Ukrainian counterpart Olexiy Resnikov also took part in the meeting. US Defense Secretary Austin pledged international support to Ukraine even beyond the Russian war of aggression: “We are here to help Ukraine win the fight against Russia’s unjust invasion and build Ukraine’s defences for the challenges of tomorrow.”
