Kananaskis (dpa) – Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was happy with the outcome of the two-day G7 summit talks in Canada. “This G7 summit has been far more successful than I initially expected,” he said. Merz noted that the leaders had reached consensus on joint declarations across seven topics.

The heads of state and government agreed on a common position regarding the war between Israel and Iran, for instance. Yesterday, they issued statements on issues such as critical raw materials, migration and artificial intelligence.

Merz was also optimistic that the United States would increase pressure on Russia through further sanctions. The EU has just adopted its 18th package of sanctions against Russia.

In the wake of Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Merz said he hoped for an end to the regime in Tehran. “We are dealing with a regime of terror, both domestically and externally. It would be good if this regime came to an end,” he said.

There was no unified position on contentious issues such as the war in Ukraine, climate action and development aid. Unlike at previous summits, the G7 decided in advance to forego a comprehensive final communiqué.
