Wiesbaden (dpa) – Neither the war in Iran nor high energy prices appear to be deterring entrepreneurs: in the first quarter of this year, 37,500 businesses of greater economic significance were established in Germany. That was 2.8% more than in the same period last year, according to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office. At the same time, the number of complete business closures fell by 5.7% to 28,400.

Including small businesses, the number of newly registered businesses also increased, rising by 10.1% to 188,900. Around 139,400 businesses were closed between January and March, 2.0% fewer than a year earlier.

In the statistics, a business is considered to be of greater economic significance if it operates as a legal entity or partnership. This also includes businesses run by individuals listed in the commercial register or registered as tradespeople. Businesses that employ staff are likewise classified as having greater economic significance.
