"New beginning": Congratulations to Biden

Berlin (dpa) - After his shattering victory over Donald Trump in the presidential election, Joe Biden has received congratulations from around the world. In Germany, the decision of the Americans provided cross-party relief. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wrote to the 77-year-old that his election was associated with "the hope for reliability, reason and the persistent work on solutions in a restless world". Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) wished Biden "success from the bottom of her heart" and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for a "new beginning" in the severely damaged German-American relations.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the EU and the USA had built up an unprecedented partnership in the past, based on the common values of democracy, freedom, human rights, social justice and an open economy. "As the world continues to change and new challenges and opportunities emerge, our renewed partnership will be of particular importance", she wrote.
According to EU sources, there was a vote within the European Union on when congratulations were appropriate. The decision was taken at 19.00 German time - one and a half hours after it was clear that Biden was uncatchable ahead of Trump. However, the acting President has taken legal action in several states against the results or the further counting of votes cast. Perhaps this is one reason why not all heads of state and government congratulated on Saturday.
