Berlin (dpa) – In connection with a trip to Jordan and Israel, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is advocating a ceasefire in the Gaza war. “It’s important to reach an agreement very quickly now on a ceasefire that would allow the hostages to be released while also allowing humanitarian aid to reach Gaza,” said Scholz ahead of a two-day trip to Jordan and Israel.

At the same time, the Chancellor once again warned Israel against carrying out a military operation in Rafah in the south of the coastal strip. “We’re concerned about how the situation with the military will develop. In particular, there is a danger that a full-scale offensive in Rafah could result in large numbers of terrible civilian casualties, and this must be avoided at all costs.” Mr Scholz is due to meet King Abdullah II in Jordan, and talks are also planned with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog and hostage relatives in Israel.

The Federal Armed Forces have begun dropping aid supplies for those in need in the embattled Gaza Strip. The first delivery of items such as rice and flour was parachuted from a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft over the north of the Palestinian territory on Saturday. Further deliveries are planned.
