New York (dpa/d.de) – The German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul spoke to UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the present-day crises and conflicts, as well as the role the UN has to play in handling these. Following the talks, it was stressed in German delegation circles in New York that the UN had to become more effective in view of the large number of crises and geopolitical upheavals. Germany supports Guterres’ important UN80 reform initiative. The Secretary-General wants to comprehensively reform the world organisation’s structure, aiming to make processes more cost-effective and efficient.

Wadephul stated that if Germany was elected as a member of the UN Security Council on Wednesday, his country would be contributing to overcoming the blockages that the UN’s most powerful committee is frequently affected by. “We want to make sure that the non-permanent members in particular are going to constitute a key factor within the UN Security Council,” the Foreign Minister announced. He added that the committee’s ability to act had to improve once again.

The President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, is calling on the United Nations to take courageous reform steps in view of the current wars and crises. Anyone who wished to strengthen the international organisation could not leave the field to “those who really want to destroy the United Nations,” she said.
