Course set for Asia-Pacific
Sonne, the newly commissioned German research vessel, will be exploring the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
The world’s most advanced research vessel was officially handed over to researchers in Wilhelmshaven in November 2014. 116 metres long and 20.6 metres wide, Sonne (Sun) boasts state-of-the-art technology, laboratories, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and a weather station, not to mention room for up to 40 scientists and the crew. The ship will set sail in January 2015 to explore the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Both bodies of water are of critical importance to the globe’s climate.
