Promoting a diverse society

At their national congress in Berlin, Neue Deutsche Organisationen set out guidelines for openness and equal opportunities.

Diversity enriches – that’s the message of a growing number of networks. Young people from immigrant families have joined forces in groups and projects and are making a stand for equal participation. Since 2015 they have worked together under the umbrella of Neue Deutsche Organisationen (NDO) – New German Organisations – and in February 2016 they met in Berlin for their second national congress entitled: “Germany, we need to talk!”

Attended by representatives of over 100 organisations, the meeting was all about the debate on immigration and integration. “We need the kind of social policy that takes everyone into account,” says NDO coordinator Breschkai Ferhard, adding that “integration policy for migrants” is no longer in keeping with the times. The participants of the two-day congress developed concrete goals designed to pave the way towards a society in which even greater importance is attached to the value of diversity. This issue should for example become an integral part of teacher training, it was claimed. Furthermore, the organisations are calling for a commitment to diversity and equal opportunities to be enshrined in the constitution and for a ministry of social policy to be established.
