Germany and Brazil are on the final straight. It is not only players, fans and managers from both countries who are gearing up for the FIFA World Cup; another major joint event is also heading towards its culmination: the Year of Germany in Brazil. Sport has been just one of many subjects during the exchange of ideas that began in May 2013. Initiated by the Federal Foreign Office, this year of bridge-building shows the great breadth of already existing and possible future ties. It involves art and culture, education and work, science and research.

Now, at the end, the organizers are again focusing all attention on partnership – with art objects called United Buddy Bears. Thanks to their size and vibrant colours, they cannot be overlooked. Almost 150 of the two-metre-tall figures that were designed by artists from all over the world will be long-term guests at the Copacabana from the beginning of May to the middle of July. “The buddy bears are as diverse as we humans, and they stand for tolerance, friendship and international understanding without a moralizing undertone,” explains Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier: “Since the first exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in 2002 these popular figures have symbolized the desire for unity in diversity and for the peaceful coexistence of people and cultures.”

Cultural, research and training projects

When these beary works of art return to Berlin in July, it will also mean the end of a festival of interchange that will ensure continuing cooperation. Many points of contact have arisen during the last year, and concerts, readings, exhibitions and discussions have increased awareness of Germany in Brazil. A binational chamber music ensemble, the Young Euro Classic Ensemble Brazil-Germany, brought together young artists from both countries, while the special exhibition “bauhaus.photo.film” brought European Modernism to life in Brazil. German and international firms offered careers advice at training fairs, and the Max Planck Society’s Science Tunnel promoted Germany as a research location.
