Project description:

Camerata Laranjeiras is a unique Rio-based project that integrates young people from different backgrounds without any social boundaries. We believe, with music, hearts beat at the same rhythm. Our orchestra was founded by two violinists, Tiago Cosmo (Brazil) and Karolin Broosch (Germany), inspired by the idea of creating an orchestra that combines musical excellence with social impact.

The string orchestra aims to nurture musical and interpersonal skills among gifted musicians from all social classes. Our musicians gain a collective identity through new musical experiences. We value the open minds, respect, focus and responsibility of all members to prepare them for a successful adult life, personally and professionally.

Importantly, music connects and brings joy; our group’s motivation every day. Since 2013 Camerata Laranjeiras has performed more than 250 concerts in public places, schools, churches, residences and concert venues. Our repertoire is very versatile from baroque music, Bossa Nova to Pop & Rock, thereby ensuring that the performances are accessible and relevant to both the young performers and their audience.

We strive to integrate the whole city through concerts, including the low-income areas ‘favelas’. Many members of the orchestra are from these areas and are very proud to bring our music to their neighborhoods.

Our wish is to integrate the world and we have started planning our first international musical tour in Germany at the end of 2017.

Goal and purpose of the project:

In our fragmented society, our purpose is to build musical bridges and support our young musicians’ path in life.

Our members are highly valued, we encourage development of social skills, including empathy and flexibility in their personal and musical life. Through other activities, such as dancing and meditation, we help to broaden their horizon.

Camerata Laranjeiras seeks to inspire our members and the citizens around us to gain from intercultural experiences bringing joy to everyone’s heart.

Motivation of the applicant / applicant team:

Music is a universal language - independent of social background.

We know that music connects and encourages cultural exchange of people around the world. By embracing the opportunities we have encountered through music, we are heartfully and voluntarily sharing our knowledge with young musicians through Camerata Laranjeiras.

Playing music teaches important values and nurtures the development of children and young adults to use their skills to achieve their goals in life, personally and professionally.
