Berlin (d.de) – The Federal Government earmarks around 35 million euros for monument conservation. This was decided by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag. The 14th edition of the special programme for monument conservation provides for more than 140 cultural monuments and historic organs to be refurbished.

Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer highlighted the societal significance of historic buildings. “Cultural buildings are part of our identity as a cultural nation. They promote social cohesion by acting as meeting spaces,” he said.

The funded projects include work on the Jewish cemetery in Mannheim, the Junkers hangars that are part of the former Oberschleissheim airport, the Mediterranean House in Berlin’s botanical gardens and the cloister of Aachen Cathedral. Funding is also provided for refurbishing historic organs, such as in the Bergkirche in Bad Bergzabern.

Between the start of the programme and 2025, the Federal Government had invested a total of 547 million euros. The federal states, municipalities and owners of the buildings also participate in the financing. Construction and craft businesses from the area of monument conservation will also benefit from the funding.

The Budget Committee had previously provided 50 million euros for another funding phase. It has therefore been ensured that the special programme for monument conservation can continue.
