Germany exceeds climate target
As a result of the corona crisis, Germany has exceeded its climate protection target for the year 2020.
Berlin (dpa) - As a result of the corona crisis, Germany has exceeded its climate protection target for the year 2020, according to experts. Last year, greenhouse gas emissions were 42.3 percent below the 1990 level, according to an analysis by the think tank Agora Energiewende. The target for 2020, which had actually already been written off, was to reduce emissions by 40 percent as compared with 1990.
According to the calculations, emissions fell by over 80 million tonnes of CO2 to around 722 million tonnes. However, two thirds of this reduction came courtesy of the corona pandemic; without it, the decrease would have been only about 25 million tonnes and the 2020 target would not have been met - the reduction would then have been 37.8 per cent.
