Germany helps Italian patients
The German state of Saxony responds to a request for help and admits Corona patients from Italy.
Leipzig (dpa) - A group of Corona patients from Italy who are to receive further treatment in the state of Saxony were flown from crisis-hit Italy in the early hours of Tuesday.
Two emergency service vehicles were waiting on the tarmac at Leipzig-Halle Airport to take the patients to hospital.
On Monday, Saxony's state premier Michael Kretschmer announced that Saxony wanted to admit Corona patients from Italy to its hospitals to receive further treatment there.
He was responding to a request for help from Italy, one of the worst-affected countries in the global coronavirus pandemic.
"This is a very important signal that we can help others," Kretschmer said.
He initially spoke of six patients from Italy, although it later emerged that eight people were being brought back for treatment at different hospitals.
They were flown to Germany in an Italian military plane.
