Berlin (dpa) - The leaders of the Greens and the FDP unexpectedly held preliminary talks on Tuesday concerning a joint government participation. Green Party leaders Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck met with FDP leader Christian Lindner and Secretary General Volker Wissing. All four posted a photo of the quartet on Instagram and wrote: "In the search for a new government, we are exploring common ground and possible ways to bridge dividing lines. And we are even finding some. Exciting times."

Following the Bundestag election, the Greens and the Liberals could form either a “traffic light” coalition with the SPD or forge an alliance with the CDU/CSU. However, the SPD with its chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz won the election on Sunday. The declared goal of the Greens and the FDP is to agree on basic lines of political cooperation, which will serve as a prerequisite for a "new start" in government policy in Germany. Only later do both want to talk to the party of a possible chancellor.
