Damaskus (d.de) – Minister of State Serap Güler has travelled to Syria to discuss the country’s reconstruction as well as stronger business cooperation. She will be meeting representatives of the Syrian government, the business sector, civil society and various minority groups. In addition to Damascus, she will be visiting the coastal cities of Tartus and Latakia, as well as the heavily destroyed city of Aleppo.

“Now, we are witnessing the possible dawn of a new Syria,” Güler said. She added that Germany had “a paramount interest in a stable Syria that lives in peace with its neighbours and offers its citizens the prospect of peace and a life in security and dignity”. The Minister of State also campaigned for more investment and trade. She said that the Syrian Government had announced its intentions to open the country’s economy as well as to modernise its infrastructure to create better conditions for investment by foreign companies.

An inclusive transition process was key to stabilising the country, Ms Güler said. She continued by pointing out that this had to include the convening in the near future of a People’s Assembly that had to represent the interests of all Syrians to serve as a platform for a peaceful debate on the future of Syria.
