Berlin (dpa)- Angela Merkel has assured the new Israeli President that protecting Jewish life in Germany is a cornerstone of German policy. "The unique friendship between our countries is a historic stroke of luck. We will continue to nurture this friendship in the future so that the special relationship between our two countries can continue to develop positively during your term in office," reads the Chancellor's congratulatory letter to Isaac Herzog.

The Chancellor wished the former leader of the Labour Party "strength and great success" in his responsible task. Herzog's father Chaim already served as Israel’s head of state, and his family was among the group of Jews who originally immigrated from Europe and who shaped the young democracy for decades.
