Merz on UN failure: Germany remains pillar
Germany was not elected to the UN Security Council as it had hoped. Chancellor Merz congratulates Portugal and Austria and promises to continue to embrace its responsibility.
Berlin (dpa) - Following Germany’s failure to secure a seat on the UN Security Council, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised that the country will continue to embrace its responsibilities in the United Nations unchanged. “This result does not alter the tasks we face at the United Nations,” he said in Berlin. “Germany remains a reliable pillar of the multilateral system. We bear this responsibility with resolve.”
For the first time, Germany had failed in its application to secure a two-year membership of the UN’s most important body. The UN General Assembly in New York elected Portugal and Austria, which Merz congratulated. “We share a close European partnership with both countries, as well as a shared responsibility within the United Nations,” said the chancellor.
Merz thanked everyone who had pushed Germany’s application forward. “It was right to do this work, and it will benefit Germany in the long term.”
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that the reasons for the failure would be analysed in detail.
