Merz: there is hope for peace in Ukraine
Following consultations with the Ukrainian President as well as European and US representatives, Merz confirmed a number of fundamental prerequisites for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine war.

Berlin (dpa, AA, d.de) – Following his consultations about Ukraine with Ukraine's President Zelenskiy and representatives from Europe and the US, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed five fundamental prerequisites for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine war.
These include Ukraine's participation in any further meetings and a ceasefire as the first step. Key points must then be agreed in a framework agreement. He also stated that “Ukraine is willing to negotiate territorial issues. However, the so-called contact line must be the starting point here, and a legal recognition of Russian occupations is not up for debate. The principle that borders must not be moved by force has to remain in effect.” Merz added that "robust security guarantees for Kyiv" were also essential, and that any negotiations had to be part of a joint trans-Atlantic strategy.
Merz is confident that the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin on Friday will lead to positive results: “There is hope that progress will be made. There is hope for peace in Ukraine.” The Federal Chancellor stressed that if the meeting in Alaska had no effect, the US and Europe had to exert greater pressure.
Alongside further allies, Germany has agreed to provide funding for one of the initial comprehensive support packages for Ukraine as part of the PURL mechanism (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List). The package is to have a total value of up to 500 million US dollars.
