Offshore wind power achieves new record
The expansion of offshore wind power in Germany’s North and Baltic Seas has exceeded an important threshold.
Berlin (dpa) – Progress is being made in Germany with the expansion of offshore wind power. With 1,077 megawatts of new installed capacity, the first half of 2026 saw a particularly sharp increase, as the Federal Association for Offshore Wind Energy (BWO) reported. As a result, the ten gigawatt (GW) mark was exceeded for the first time as of 30 June. 1,764 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 10.8 GW were operating in the North and Baltic Seas.
According to the BWO, German offshore wind power plants produced around 26.1 million megawatt hours of electricity in 2025. Mathematically speaking, this was enough to meet the demand of 8.7 million households with an annual consumption of 3,000 kilowatt hours.
