Paris (dpa) – When Alexander Zverev was finally presented the coveted Coupe des Mousquetaires he kissed and caressed it, and held it in his arms tenderly, like a baby. “It’s a happy ending at last,” the German tennis star said at the French Open presentation ceremony on Court Philippe Chatrier.

With his historic victory in the final in Paris, Zverev won his long-awaited first Grand Slam title, shedding the stigma of being “incomplete”. Despite not being in his best physical shape, the 29-year-old was able to secure a deserved victory against Flavio Cobolli (24) from Italy on the clay court in Paris in a dramatic five-set thriller (6:1, 4:6, 6:4, 6:7 (5:7), 6:1).

Zverev is the first German man to win a Grand Slam title since Boris Becker’s Australian Open victory 30 years ago. “It was more than deserved,” Becker said to Eurosport, adding: “It’s incredible, I am very proud of him.”

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz also congratulated the tennis player. “What an extraordinary success!” Merz wrote on X: “This powerful performance thrills an entire nation.”
