Wadephul: Great breakthrough for people in Sudan

Two weeks ago, a conference in Berlin aimed to raise funding for Sudan; now, a joint declaration has been issued in the form of the Berlin Principles.

Rabat (dpa) – A good two weeks after the international Sudan Conference in Berlin, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office has published the Berlin Principles, a joint declaration by those states seeking to mediate in the conflict. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the declaration by all regional actors with influence on the parties to the conflict as an important success. “This is a great breakthrough for the people in Sudan, for the people in the Horn of Africa,” he said in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

The unity and territorial integrity of Sudan are emphasised in the Berlin Principles. The signatories stress that any direct or indirect support from outside Sudan, be it logistical, financial or military, which enables the conflict to continue, must come to an end.

Besides the foreign ministries of the donor and mediating states, civilian actors from Sudan had also taken part in the conference in Berlin. The declaration especially highlights the need for a political solution to the conflict and for aid organisations to have unhindered access to people in need.
