Project description:
Old is Diamond is an initiative that advocates for better and thought through policies, legislation and programs for the elderly(65years and above) in Kenya.
Old is Diamond has started a number of programs that support the elderly in different counties in Kenya such as:
1. Rescue of the homeless, neglected and abused elderly people.
2. Formation of support groups amongst the elderly
3. Recreational programs such as dances, knitting and weaving, cooking and so on.
4. Advocacy of the needs of the elderly from the government and the community at large. For example; Free health care (Which the government gave in May and allocated in the 2017/2018 budget for 70 years and above)
5. Helping them get income through their skills and talents for example; promoting and selling their products and services such as: books, poultry, baked items, baskets and so on
Goal and purpose of the project:
To ensure there are better and thought through policies, legislation and programs for the elderly in Kenya.
Motivation of the applicant:
The fact that the elderly people are the reason we are here today. They bore us, raised us and fought for our freedom. They deserve a good and dignified sunset.
The fact that we are all qualified candidates of old age if we are lucky and blessed enough to live long.
Use of prize money:
The prize money will help us:
1. The prize money will also help us build our fist and pilot recreational center for the elderly that will help be a place where they meet and talk, play and get training on different skills. The center will also be a working area where they go to make their items for sale from… which will also be an exhibition/ display center for their work. Unlike now that they work and meet in each other’s homes even in big numbers.
2. Complete a pilot program we started shooting for a TV show that is aimed at reflecting the lives of the elderly in Kenya showing their daily challenges as well as educating younger generations on how to prepare for their twilight years. (We have a TV station that has already agreed to air the program for free)
3. We intend to shoot videos for the music we have produced all with the aim of advocating and creating awareness on the challenges faced by the elderly. The music also advices younger generations to plan well for their sunset. Our music appeals to the younger generations since its trendy and contemporary. (We have hip-hop, rap, afro-beat and spoken word)
