Creation of a shelter for the treatment and training of dogs and cats in street situation in the Dominican Republic, so that they can be reintegrated into the community through adoptions.
Define the areas and spaces necessary to form the Refuge to meet the needs of animals and the human-animal relationship. Determine the policies, processes and activities of the shelter to ensure the good service delivery, care and training of the animals served. Make society aware of proper care and non-abandonment of pets, sterilization as the only means of population control, adoption instead of buying animals, compliance with the law 248-12.
Goal and purpose of the project
Due to the above problem, the need arose to create a place in which these dogs and cats are treated for their different problems, which can be both physical and psychological, so that they have a better quality of life, later to be Trained and finally given for adoption. The treatment and training is done so that the dog or cat upon arriving in their new home, behave well, be obedient and manage to integrate easily into their new lifestyle, and thus avoid re-abandonment.
If this project is carried out, it would be contributing both to the well-being of these animals as well as to society, since it would reduce the rate of stray animals, being these contributors to the urban disaster, when they are forced to smoke in the garbage for Food, and the spread of diseases such as scabies, rabies, among others, using a series of measures aimed mainly at the reduction and subsequent control of the canine / feline population and the eradication of Irresponsible Tenure practices.
From the initial economic perspective, it is less expensive to kill any animal than to rescue it, give it a shelter, vaccinate it and sterilize it, therefore the most appropriate which is true. But if we look at the big picture we have to understand that the slaughter of animals creates gaps in the habitat, that is, allows the survivors to successfully breed more dogs and cats, so the problem and the growth rate of the animals will be maintained. In order to eradicate the stray dog and cat, that is to say, it is possible to avoid the reappearance of the problem, it is necessary to attack its real causes to the "root problem": Human irresponsibility.
In this respect it should be noted that the dogs and cats that roam the streets are animals with owners and that those who are genuinely homeless are their descendants who at the time of their birth also owned. Therefore the slaughter is not the solution. With regard to the above, the shelter would represent a support to the social and economic efforts of foundations, organizations and rescuers, who fight for projects that contemplate education, sanctions against irresponsible tenure and tools of population control. Including the academic part, since Veterinary students of the UASD or any other University, could be included later, in participating in the project through practices, helping their formation and giving back to the community.
