The conference “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue – towards a global Energiewende“ wants to trigger an international movement: climate-friendly, cross-border and economically promising.

Linguistically, the term “Energiewende“ is already widespread. The German expression has established itself internationally in any discussion of Germany’s historic plan to switch to an economy powered by renewable, non-nuclear sources of energy. Media such as the New York Times and the Economist now use the German word as a matter of course. Lest the world career of “Energiewende“ remain only linguistic, the German government is increasingly relying on international cooperation. For in times of climate change and resource constraints this economic realignment is one of Germany’s most important political projects. The Federal Government and the German Renewable Energy Federation have therefore organized for the first time an energy transition conference entitled “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2015 – towards a global Energiewende”. To be held at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, the conference will bring together foreign ministers and energy ministers with industry representatives and actors from science, administration and civil society.

Overcome scepticism, see opportunities

In the political, economic, legal and technical debates, it is also important to dispel scepticism. “Germany wants to be a model for other countries and show that a sustainable energy policy can be economically successful. For climate and resource protection works all the more effectively, the greater the number of countries that participate”, emphasized Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Sigmar Gabriel in a DE interview. In advance of the United Nations World Climate Conference COP21 in Paris at the end of 2015, the Berlin conference is also intended to show that climate protection, a secure energy supply and economic growth fit together. Even more – that the “Energiewende” brings with it many opportunities.
