Indian Embassy

The new building designed by German architects has a striking facade of red Indian sandstone.

When Berlin was chosen as Germany’s new capital city, many embassies also had to move from Bonn to Berlin – or look for a suitable site and build a new one. Particularly impressive is India’s newly built embassy in Berlin’s Tiergarten district. The building is cuboid in shape with a cylindrical atrium cutting into it and a striking facade of red Indian sandstone. Unlike many other countries, India did not commission an architect from its own country, but a German firm called Leon Wohlhage Wernik. The Berlin-based architects succeeded in translating Indian building traditions and craftsmanship into a modern architectural language.
