CAREER BOOST. The young Korean Sumi Hwang has won the Federal President’s prize, second prize in the voice category, in the 2014 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Conservatory competition. Sumi Hwang studied singing from 2004 to 2011 at Seoul National University, where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She is currently completing her training at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, where she is studying art song interpretation and singing at Master’s level. She also won second place in an international music competition organized by ARD, the German broadcaster, in 2012. Surprisingly, singing has not always been her main career wish. Sumi Hwang wanted to be a ballerina and only sang in a youth choir alongside her ballet classes, before the music director advised her to change her focus – which she has done with great success.
