Dr. Abdel Kader Haïdara rescued many culturally priceless Timbuktu Islamic manuscripts from destruction by rebels in 2013 – partly with German assistance. The library director has now been awarded the Africa Prize of the German Africa Foundation for his efforts. The Federal Foreign Office and the Gerda Henkel Foundation are contributing to the conservation of these treasures. On 18 June 2014, Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier welcomed Dr. Haïdara with representatives of the Malian government and international foundations and a number of experts for a two-day meeting at the Federal Foreign Office.
