The German architect Jürgen Engel is building the world’s third largest mosque after the pilgrimage sites of Mecca and Medina. It is the Djamaâ el Djazaïr in Algiers. The mosque will accommodate more than 30,000 people when it opens in 2017.

The minaret will be the tallest building in Africa. But the mosque will be far more than a place for prayer: a university, cafés and a kindergarten will make it into a new meeting place in the city. The modern architectural complex will offer space for 200, 000 people and will help to relieve Algiers with its six million inhabitants.
